The Gallery - Ugly?

This is ugly.

I have shown this picture to people who have recoiled in horror.   This is an act of extreme violence.  Grievous bodily harm.  A gross, and potentially fatal, assault on my body.

There is blood.  There is screaming.  One might assume there is pain.

There is my belly looking like a butcher's off-cut.

But there is also A.

Is this ugly?

  1. That makes me want to cry, and slap anyone who calls the picture ugly. There is nothing more beautiful than new life. x

  2. Definitely not ugly! One of my favourite pictures is of my brother, taken in theatre by a nurse, seconds after this same moment for him and his wife: bloodshot eyes, completely overcome with emotion. Their son! How wonderful :)

  4. For someone who has not given birth yet it looks ugly and beautiful at the same time. That might sound corny but it is...

  14. Wow! I would LOVE to have photos of my 2 being born. There is nothing to compare to those first moments - covered in gunk maybe, but oh so beautiful and full of emotion. That is a photograph to truely treasure. And one day, your child will too. Amazing! Love it!

  15. New life is always beautiful. The way it comes about isn't always. It's an amazing and powerful picture - the photographer did a great job.

I think the picture is not beautiful but A is.

  21. Thank you all for lovely comments. To be fair, I don't really think it's ugly either. In fact, I had originally selected it for Tara's first prompt: "beauty", but was persuaded otherwise by the photographer...

...yes, because in fact I suppose it's a bit of a cheat. Funnily enough I didn't take that picture myself. That would have been a multi-task too far! B took it, and although I love the composition, and as Barbara says, he did a great job, I don't think he'll hate me for saying it was fluke. The one he took of S, about forty five seconds earlier, was about two seconds too late and is wonderfully focused on her not very pretty new born genitals!

And in response to particular comments/questions:

Nova, she was a good weight for a twin, but not that big. 5lb 14oz. S was 5lb 7oz. I was delighted, because they were big enough not to need special care, and I got to take them pretty much straight home!

FlyingStart - so sorry! Hope the cleaning up wasn't too tough and you enjoyed the rest of the toast!

Fiona - it's amazing isn't it? I'm so glad I've got it. We have none of L (natural delivery, and I do have my modesty...) and the one of S is, as I've said, less good. But this one I love!

Louise - wow! Lucky you! I'm sure it's terribly hard work, but it must be amazing to see...

Mad Mummy - I hope I didn't put you off posting? Would love to see the picture some day.

And Chelle - not corny. Exactly right, and precisely what I was hoping people would say/think. Thank you.

  22. Not even a teeny bit ugly - this is just beautiful.. what can ever be more beautiful than a new baby coming into the world *sniff*

  23. Amazing and so not ugly! Though have to say that looks like one big baby - phew, glad the sunroof was used!

  24. Thank you both! Although interesting that you too (Nova said much the same thing) thought she was a big baby MD. She was a good size for a twin born at 36 weeks, but definitely not what you might call big - 5lb 14oz. A friend had a 10lb 11oz baby on Thurs - that's nearly as much as both of mine put together!

  25. Amazing, she certainly doesn't look that weeny in the picture. My last three were 10lbs so giants in comparison.

I know. I'm sorry. I hate these word recognition, are you a robot, guff things too, but having just got rid of a large number of ungrammatical and poorly spelt adverts for all sorts of things I don't want, and especially don't want on my blog, I'm hoping that this will mean that only lovely people, of the actually a person variety, will comment.

So please do. Comments are great...
